I am not sure how much information is filtering out of India in regards to Gay rights here in India but there was a judgement made in December making gay sex a criminal act again. There was an appeal to this, and early this week it was agreed that this ruling would not be reviewed and that the basis would remain.
The ruling stated 'that homosexuality or unnatural sex between two consenting adults was illegal' and that people could be and would be charged with breaking this law. They went on to say that the number of people actually charged was so small that it didn't effect many. Are they serious ?? I cannot believe that this is the attitude of these leaders. Just because only a small number of people have been charged in this small time, does not change the overall issue with this ruling.
Homosexuality was decriminalised in India in 2009 but, in 2013 was re-criminilised again. So in that timeframe of 3+ years, many gay Indians made there sexual orientation known to families, communities, colleagues, etc and now they are being cast as criminals. These people are now, again, vulnerable to abuse and discrimination from the public and could face the 153 year-old rule of ten years imprisonment.
How can this be acceptable ? I do not understand how India can do this when they so want to be growing as an International hub and become more 'civilised'. They have all the tools to be a bigger and better country but with rulings like these, the doors remain more firmly closed then ever.
