Bangalore Basics

I thought I should provide some basic facts about our new home here in India. Jack and I did some research this morning to share with you.

Bangalore is the capital city of the state of Karnataka. It is located inland in the south of India and is knowing for its great weather with an average temperature of 29 degrees. Currently it is about 27 daily and the locals think its too cold for swimming - but not us !! It's currently the wet season so often in the afternoon a heavy shower will come over but nothing too serious and it won't deter us from having fun.

Apparently Bangalore is known as the Garden City with 40% of the city being parks and gardens.  Unfortunately we haven't been able to find a nice space to kick a footie yet. (Apart from the hotel garden where the security guard was not impressed!) however we will continue the search.  It should be different when we move to Palm Meadows (our upcoming home).

Bangalore has the highest density of traffic in India - and don't we know it!!  It also has the highest number of 2-wheelers in the world, and auto-ricks are a popular way of getting around. The boys are still calling them tuk-tuks.

The name Bangalore has a few historic meanings but generally it has been known to mean 'boiled beans' - it came from a story that an old lady served a passing ruler, who got lost in the forest, a plate of beans.  He then named the area after this dish.

Bangalore was the first city in India to receive electricity. Pity it's not always working and we are in the dark quite a bit ......

Some famous cricket players from Bangalore are: Anil Kumble and Rahul Dravid. The Royal Challengers Bangalore will be our team to follow. Go RCB !!

Bangalore is known as the 'Silicon Valley of India'. Lots of tech companies and outsourcing - hence the reason ssga have an office here.

The city is famous for its dog bites, an average of 12 people are bitten per minute. Apparently there are 200,000 stray dogs in the city - they look disgusting!! Not sure about these statistics - but we'll just stear clear anyway.

The estimated population is 7.2 million people and we think 50% are currently beeping their horn!!  It is incredibly noisy out there.

The Mosquitos are A380 sized and Max and I are their prime targets. The itch is not so bad but the hot, red mound after the bite is painful!!

You're probably aware that cows are sacred, so they just wander around wherever they wish. It sounds very peaceful and kind but unfortunately this freedom means their main diet is the discarded rubbish and filth on the roadside. We have been told many of them die from this lifestyle.

Max is quite concerned about all the children he sees walking along the streets alone. He keeps asking where their 'adult' is ? Most parents are at work so the children find their own way to/from school.

So, there are just a few interesting facts.

Until next time..... Namaste. Some pictures below.
